Day 65 – Thursday 3 September 2020 – Secondary Schools

Hello and welcome once again to Pray for Ryde 2020 – it’s been great to join together as God’s people from various congregations in the area and to pray for the local community over these summer months.

Our focus today is on the local Secondary Schools who have started their new term this week. We think especially of everyone at Ryde Academy and Ryde School in our town, but we are also aware that children from the area also attend other schools – The Bay CofE  School in Sandown, Priory School in Whippingham, Christ the King College, The Island Innovation 6th Form Campus and the Isle of Wight College in Newport and The Free School and St Catherine’s School in Ventnor. A few pop across the Solent to other places.

We ask God’s blessing on all these school communities as they begin this new term and adjust to all the necessary changes that make life and education so challenging at the moment. We must pray for wisdom for the leadership teams and for School Governors as they make decisions and respond to the issues that will inevitably arise in these early weeks.

This has been such a tough six months and many have suffered badly in terms of their schooling and in all kinds of other ways – being locked down and away from friends and the various other activities that can be so vital in a young person’s life and development.

We read about true wisdom and learning in the book of Proverbs:

“Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
    teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
    and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
(Proverbs 9:9-10)

Please join me now as we pray for our Secondary Schools.

Lord God our gracious Heavenly Father, we lift before you the various educational communities in our area that are serving the 11+ age group. Pour out your blessing on students, teachers and all the support staff as they get used to being together again and adjust to the new ways of working.

Keep everyone safe we pray; hold back the virus, dear Lord, and help young people to behave responsibly and to play their part in stopping the spread of infection. Give strength to all the staff members as they work in a rather different environment and as they seek to maintain discipline and try to uphold the new rules of working. Give everyone patience we pray, and real sensitivity and understanding of the needs of those around them

We especially think of pupils in Year 7 starting in places that are very new and alien to them, and others making new beginnings for sixth form studies or other courses, mainly in Year 12. We ask you to be with all those young people who feel vulnerable or anxious, returning into a busy environment after such a long period away and for staff who are concerned for their own health and safety.

Give parents and carers peace and may they learn to trust this new season to you and know your love and protection around their families. Reveal yourself, dear Lord, to many people as they seek help and strength in these challenging weeks and may we your church be ready to offer support and encouragement.

We pray for School Assemblies and those from local churches that normally offer help and support with these and with Religious education, which has all been so disrupted in recent times.

We bring all these prayers in the precious name of Jesus. Amen

Do please join us on Zoom for prayer together at 7pm tonight when we can pray some more for the local schools. It’s just for 15 minutes so please do join in on any day you are free.
