Hello and welcome to day 69 in our prayer initiative.
I am Samantha Martell, Vicar for the parishes of All Saints’, Ryde and St Michael and & All Angels, Swanmore.
Today we are praying for the children’s clubs and societies here in Ryde and the surrounding areas.
By 2025 local authorities will face a £3 billion funding gap for children’s services.
Funding for local authority children and young people’s services has been reduced by 30%
At the same time, local authority spending on children and young people’s services has reduced by 25%
Central government funding per child has almost halved.
Local authority spending on early intervention services for children and young people has been halved.
We need to pray that Central government can
• Provide additional funding for children and young people’s services in the Spending Review to address the funding gap.
• Ensure that there is a clear link between the likely level of need and the level of funding available in each local area
• Ensure that all local authorities have the resources to sustain a consistent offer of early intervention There has been a shift from spending on early intervention services such as children’s centres and family support, to spending on late intervention, services such as safeguarding and children in care. Funding for children and young people’s services for the most deprived local authorities has fallen almost twice as fast as for the least deprived.
And we need to pray that God will guide us as churches in our communities to help and support where it is needed.
In the letter of James we read this.
Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?
They say it takes a village to raise a child.
Well, we are more than a village, we are a Church, the body of Christ in the world to do God’s will and to care for God’s creation and all that is in it.
I pray for this fractured world, and for the wonders of creation. For children, who teach us so much about unconditional love.
I pray for all the children’s clubs and societi4es who help and provide for children and families in our area. For those who are called to work or volunteer in this vital role of nurturing our future generations.
I pray that money will stop being cut, wasted and that it can be refocussed onto what is needed to protect the lives of children everywhere; to give them hope and encouragement; to be able to be children and to laugh and learn and love their neighbour as is our commandment.
