Day 74 – Saturday 12 September 2020 – Tradesmen & Women

Good morning, I’m Rev Veronica of Binstead, Havenstreet and Wootton.

Our theme today is: Trades women and men

Trades women and men includes electricians, plumbers and pipefitters, construction equipment operators, window cleaners, welders, carpenters, gardeners and painters, plasterers, tailors/dressmakers, tentmakers, chefs and bakers.  We remember and bring to our hearts and minds our Lord Jesus, who in his earthly life learned his trade from his earthly father, Joseph.  The trade was handed down from Father to Son.

We also bring to mind the words of St Paul, the tent maker, to the church in Colossae:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord, and not for yourselves. Remember that the Lord will reward you; you will receive what he has kept for his people. For Christ is the real master you serve.”  (Colossians 3:23-24)

And so we pray…

Lord God,

We pray for all trades women and men living and working on the Isle of Wight, and we thank you that they have been happy to follow their calling to work their hands in all sorts of ways.  We give thanks for the creative desire that you have inspired them with.  We give thanks that they are willing to share their gifts and talents, and that we are able to enjoy and benefit from their creations.

Lord God,

Help all trades women and men to look upon their work
with the eyes of faith,
recognising it as their share in God’s own creative activity
and in Christ’s work of our redemption.

Inspire these people,
give them honest and humble faith,
strong with Christ’s true liberty,
Make their labour fruitful to eternity!

Inspire all of us to work wholeheartedly in this world, seeking always to give you glory.

Lord God,

Do not forget what your hands have made. Grant that all trades women and men secure employment and a just income.

God our Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, in every age you call us to use and develop our gifts for the good of others.  Help us to do the work you have asked and come to the rewards you have promised. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
