Hello and welcome once again to Pray for Ryde 2020 – we are very much on the home straight now but let’s keep up our prayers for the community and our calling to serve as God’s people in the area.
My Name is Rev Brian Harley, Minister of the IoW Group of United Reformed Churches.
Our focus today is on the landlord’s and estate agents. My wife and I are fortunate enough to own a house and so have the responsibility for being landlords – the church provides our home in Shanklin, so we are also tenants. There is a lot to think about in making sure the place is well cared for and that all the legal obligations are covered – gas safety, smoke alarms, electrical checks and even an up to date Energy Performance Certificate.
We all know that there are sadly many unscrupulous landlords around who are only out to make money and so try and get away with as little expenditure as possible. Lots of people have little option but to live in terrible substandard accommodation.
At present there are many situations where tenants have been unable to keep up rent payments due to loss of income, so lots of eviction cases are building up – the Government protected tenants during the lockdown period so there could be a very painful season ahead with many folk losing their homes.
Estate Agents are often caricatured as being pushy and rather smarmy and being somewhat economical with the truth – some are of course, and quite a few young people try doing the job for short period between other things and may not be very skilled. But there are many who make a career out of it and pride themselves on good service and so build up a really good reputation. They often act as letting agents and so manage properties on behalf of landlords.
All these people need our prayers as this very difficult and uncertain season continues to unfold.
The Lord speaks through his Prophet Isaiah about us all having a place we might call “home sweet home”:
The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert,
his righteousness live in the fertile field.
The fruit of that righteousness will be peace;
its effect will be quietness and confidence for ever.
My people will live in peaceful dwelling-places,
in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. Isaiah 32:16-18
Please join me now as we pray for local Landlords and Estate Agents.
Lord God, Father of all the nations, we thank you that it is your desire that everyone can have a safe place to call home. We pray today for those in the business of buying, selling and renting houses and apartments. We pray that your righteousness and justice might be evident in all transactions and dealings and that you would protect the most vulnerable from being exploited.
We pray that Landlords would care properly for those who rent their properties and give full attention to matters of heath and safety. We also ask that when their premises are abused and trashed they would get proper compensation from those at fault.
Bless those who work in local businesses that market homes and act as letting agents. Help them to do their work honestly and punctually to help people through the often fraught and drawn out process of moving home. Pour out your grace and healing oil on any troubled situations and give all these professionals wisdom and insight to give good, reliable advice.
We bring all these prayers in the precious name of Jesus, the Son of Man who had nowhere to lay his head. Amen Do please join us on Zoom for prayer together at 7pm tonight where you can add your prayers to mine. It’s just for 15 minutes so please do join in when you are free over these final few days together.
