Day 33 – Sunday 2 August 2020 – Road Maintenance Crews

Welcome again to Pray For Ryde. Today is the 33rd day of the initiative where for 3 months we will be concentrating our thoughts and prayers for Ryde and the surrounding area.

My name is Reverend David Plumb minister of 5 Methodist Churches – Ryde, Binstead, Wootton, East Cowes and Cowes.

The Theme today Sunday 2nd August is that of Road Maintenance Crews

I would imagine we have all had a moan at some point in our lives over the conditions of the roads and especially the potholes. Today we rightly pray for those crews who work hard in all weathers, all conditions and using heavy machinery to keep our roads up to a certain standard. Along with this is the dangers of working on the roads whist traffic is still flowing just feet away from them. Sadly many maintenance crews have lost their lives in their daily work.

Luke 3v4 reads…. ‘A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain made low. The crooked roads shall become straight  and the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.   N.I.V.

This passage mentions the work that has to be done to the roads in preparation of a special visitor. In this case it is also telling us to prepare ourselves and make straight our paths for Christ to come to us and for when he returns.

Let us pray

Lord God we do pray for all of the Road Maintenance Crews here on the Isle Of Wight. The way they work through the weather conditions. all hours of the day to keep transport moving on the Island. We pray for their safety from passing motorists and from using dangerous machinery.

But we also pray that we may be more tolerant of the disruptions and also take on the meaning of Luke chapter 3 when we are told to make straight our paths and prepare the way for our Lord.

We ask this in Jesus name
