Good morning. I am Peter Leonard, Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight and it is a real joy and privilege for me to be recording this prayer as part of the 85-day prayer initiative for Ryde and the surrounding areas.
Today our focus is the Ferries, Catamaran and Hovercraft. There are many wonderful things which living on an island gives us, the beauty of God’s creation around us, a supportive and close-knit community to name but two. Living on an island also presents challenges one of which can be getting off and back on it! Even if we don’t need to do that very often there are many elements of our daily lives which still rely on the various services across the Solent. Food, fuel, medicine, clothes, papers, and a whole range of parcel delivery services.
During the recent coronavirus lockdown these services also kept key workers travelling to and from work and ensured that those patients who needed to could keep those important medical appointments.
When it comes to the things in our lives which we need we often think of that famous bible passage from Matthew Chapter 6 where we are told not to worry:
‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
So often God works through us and this is no different. One of the reasons we don’t need to worry is because there are hard working staff on Wightlink, Red Funnel and Hovertravel who ensure that our needs are met and that whether we look as good as Solomon or not, we do have what we need and can travel as we wish.
Gracious God, thank you for the opportunities and blessings of living on this island. Thank you that you meet our needs through the hard work and commitment of the cross Solent travel companies. We pray that you would keep them safe, that they would feel happy and fulfilled in their work and that they would know our gratitude and care for them. Amen
Please join us tonight if you can at 7pm online for further prayer and thanksgiving on today’s theme.
