Good morning and welcome to day 55 of our 85-day initiative to pray for Ryde and the surrounding area.
I am Samantha Martell, vicar for the parishes of AS in Ryde and St M & All A in Swanmore.
Today we are praying for our cinemas and theatre groups.
Being able to entertain us, especially during such a time as the world is going through now, is a gift. It is a blessing that we have such choice on our televisions screens, tablets, and smartphones that we can instantly log in – on demand – and watch what we fancy.
I am a fan of the radio – classical music and radio plays saw me through my university years when television was a luxury I couldn’t afford, either in monetary terms, nor one to be distracted from my studies by, so I am going to include those who entertain our ears and imaginations as well as our eyes.
Yet, for all that we can instantly access; we must be mindful that being in lockdown has caused our cinemas and theatre groups hardship. The turnstiles are still, the ice-creams are uneaten, the bars closed, and groups are unable to meet to perform for our eyes or ears. Have we become used to not going out for our entertainment? I hope not. It is sad enough that the arts budget is being squeezed in our schools, I personally would not like to see live theatre, or the chance to meet friends to enjoy the latest blockbuster taken from us.
What makes us so wonderful as the human race is our diversity, our God given talents which the Spirit bestows upon us.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12 that:
‘Brothers and sisters…There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given to believers by the same Spirit. 5 There are different ways to serve. But they all come from the same Lord. 6 There are different ways the Spirit works. But the same God is working in all these ways and in all people.
7 The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all. 8 To some people the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To others the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. 9 To others the same Spirit gives faith. To others that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. 10 To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. 11 All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides.’
And so let us pray:
Gracious God, all good things come from you and of our own do we give you. Bless all those who entertain us. Those whose gifts we may be envious of. In this time of pandemic when the livelihoods of those who perform, and of those who house those performances have been hit hard, we pray for a vaccine to be found, that we might start to come back into your glorious world.
Bless those who are uncertain about their jobs within the entertainments industry, and their families.
And we ask this in Jesus name. Amen
