Day 81 – Saturday 19 September 2020 – Respect Ryde

Hello everyone and welcome to day 81 of 85. To anyone who is new, my name is Paul Meredith and I’m the minister and Ryde Elim Pentecostal Church.

Today we are praying for Respect Ryde. This is a community-based project with the aim to provide/encourage social change. This project is particularly involved in the clean-up of our town and our beaches of litter. This is quite a problem in Ryde and the surrounding areas as many people seem to think it is ok to drop their litter wherever they want to, even if there is a bin about 10m away! It is not just litter; it also includes dog waste bags and dog waste (lacking bags) are often found and highlighted. One of their aims is to make our town a clean and tidier place not simply for residents but also for tourists. This is a particularly important group in our society and I am sure they would welcome help from anyone who is interested! You can find out about them on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Respectryde/community/?ref=page_internal.

The bible tells us that God has given us oversight and responsibility over the earth.

In Genesis 1:26-28 we read:

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Psalm 115:16:

The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, But the earth He has given to the sons of men.

The responsibility for the earth has been given to us directly by God, and therefore we are to be stewards of this earth, to be responsible for it and to maintain it. We have all heard about the plastic problem we have, and plastic litter is a big problem, not simply in Ryde, but across the whole island. Respect Ryde does it’s best to try to eradicate the issue of litter (including plastic), this not only helps the aesthetics of Ryde but also provides protection to animals who might otherwise be trapped by a variety of waste receptacles.

As such, it is important that we pray for this group, for its success, but also the message that it sends out to those who would listen.

Let us pray

Heavenly Father, we thank you that all we have is from you. We thank you that when we walk into forests or fields, onto beaches or up mountains, we can marvel at your creation and creativity. Father forgive us when we do not treat your creation as we should, when we mistreat it, and when we throw our waste products on the floor, whether that be in towns, cities, or the country side. Help us Father to become better stewards of your creation.

We thank you God for the community project that is “Respect Ryde”. We thank you that they seek to remove litter and waste from the towns, parks, and beaches. We admire their enthusiasm and desire to clean the town of Ryde and the surrounding areas of litter, in order that our towns and villages would be tidier, cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable.

We pray that you will bless them and show your favour upon them. We ask that you help provide the resources they need in terms of volunteers, and also the equipment required to pick up and contain the litter and waste they clean up.

God, protect them and keep them safe from harm, from potential hazards such as broken bottles and used needles etc. May they be encouraged by passers by and by all those who are involved in the project.

We commit this project and all other social projects into your hands as they seek to maintain and steward responsibly what you have given to us.

In Jesus name
Amen
